As I looked
below the ship at the clear blue water I saw a thick wave of fog sweep over the
water. But the fog wasn’t the type which brought misery with it, it was the one
which reflected the colours of the sky and made whatever was behind it look
majestic. “Land ahoy!” shouted the captain. I made way to the front of the ship
to see where we were heading. In front of me I saw a small hilly island. It was
nearly covered with the fog around it. Small forests of trees covered the
island making it look like a brown and green Labrador whose head and feet were
covered in snow.
Above, was
a yellow and blue sky which extended on and on over our heads. Once the yellow
met the blue they mixed together forming a sea-green colour.
“The island
is deserted captain!”yelled a sailor behind me. “No, I can see a few cottages
on those rough hills” I said. The captain silently came out of his cabin. He
was wearing his usual blue and white uniform. His long and tangled white beard
seemed like a cloud hanging beneath his face. His wrinkles made him look old
but his blue eyes sparkled making him look as if he was smiling even though he
wasn’t. If he was wearing a red coat and black boots he would have become Santa
Clause Junior. “Yes, you are right, there are a few cottages on those hills. I
think it will be fine if we stop there for a day or two. This ship needs some
rest,” said the captain patting the side of the ship.
So we
sailed on forward. The ship groaned as we stopped it a few kilometers away from
the muddy beach. No one dared bring the ship any closer to the island because
if we did then we would hit the sharp grey rocks in front of us which were
covered in seaweed. We rowed the boat on to the shore and got off. My boots
sank deep into the damp soil beneath me. Sailors kicked stones here and there.
It took us a long time to reach the first cottage because of the sticky wet
soil under our feet.
Finally we
reached. I knelt down and smelled the soil which smelt like fish. I glanced
at the captain with caution. He immediately understood and whispered “snakes”.
The captain went forward and rang the door bell. The door had many cracks in it
and the glass on the window was broken. We waited for a long time and gave up
as obviously no one was home.
The sky was
becoming darker and darker by the minute and I could see the stars winking with
huge grins. “ It is not safe out here - we must go back to the ship” said
the captain. So we followed him back to the ship and went straight back to our
cabins for a good night's sleep.
